coat

“I worked out six hours a day, six days a week to gain 16 pounds of extra muscle.”

“I speak Dutch, German, French and English and have acted in all those languages, but I like the American experience.”

“It’s interesting what happens when you take a role, I think. What happens to me – without sounding too spiritual or too hippy, I guess – is that, most of the time, you do a lot of research and you get into the character and at a certain point, the character takes over.”

“At 14, I was modeling, which helped me come out of my shell, but I always dreamed of theater school.”

“I don’t like to generalize, because I think every person has bad and good.”

“I come from a small town in the south of Holland where there was nothing to do but watch American films and television – I grew up with ‘The A-Team’, ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and ‘Edward Scissorhands’.”

“I like pretending better than reality.”

“I like long meals with friends.”

“I’m not really into trends.”

“I’m not an actor working in front of a mirror, trying to replicate her actions or anything.”

“Sometimes you walk out of a scene, and you don’t even know what happened. You feel like you’re in the zone.”

“Being in the camera’s eye is like stepping into a dream world, which is often more interesting than real life.”

“Where I grew up, there was a supermarket, a school, a hairdresser and that was it. It was a very small community.

“I love Tilda Swinton and the way she dresses. It always looks like a piece of art.”

“Denis Villeneuve is an amazing filmmaker. I feel nothing but grateful to have worked with him and had the opportunity to learn his language of cinematography.”

“I want to play so many different roles. I want to understand a lot of different people, and psychoanalysis, everything. That’s what I love about my work: getting into a character and understanding it and psychoanalyzing it and creating that character.”

“Being in the camera’s eye is like stepping into a dream world, which is often more interesting than real life.”

“You have to work your way up – that’s what I grew up with and I believe: hard work.”

“I didn’t leave Dutch cinema.”

“As a female actress I didn’t feel the need to be sexy or beautiful.”

Sylvia Hokes believes in the power of persistence and hard work in everything she does. She has literally started from zero to a hero in a span of more than ten years.
