“I think the book was always the source material. Both for the script, for everyone, for the filmmakers, for us, for the actors.
“When I was growing up I looked up to male roles and male actors because most of the movies I watched had male protagonists and they had great stories and characters. So when I was growing up, I was constantly thinking, oh, I can be Al Pacino, I can play that part. And then you kind of realize that’s the divide, and hopefully, that’s changed now.”
“I love playing people who make you go, ‘Oh fuck,’ you know? They’re challenging and make us a little bit uncomfortable. It’s just fun to go out there. One of the audition scenes I was with the guy. Knowing that someone can turn around so quickly, It’s so gross and so complete, but so honest from her. Yeah, it was fun to play, I think.”
“I never stopped writing something or playing something; It was an ongoing thing. I mean, I don’t write or direct anymore, but maybe someday I will.
“I had never worked with a stylist before. I used to find the idea of a personal stylist really uncomfortable because I thought why would I want someone to tell me what to wear? I will wear what I like and what I feel good about. And then I realized that when you’re filming and touring and you need someone to help you.”
“I think actors can be creative, but creativity shows more in the shoot because as an actor you need a neutrality about you to transform into different roles.”
“I just like people who wear what they like and feel good in.”
“Where I live in London, there are a lot of shops with very flashy clothes, Icelandic fashion is a bit more foreign to me and I think, oh my God, how can they wear that? And then I see someone in it, and they really like it, and it just takes confidence.”
“There are a lot of people out there that you don’t want to let down. At the same time, I think there is a lot of support. There’s a lot of enthusiasm and good energy coming from a group of people like that.”
“I find it a bit scary sometimes when suddenly you can’t hide behind a character and you have to talk a lot about yourself. But you get over it.”
“I grew up [acting] The ideal of the world is: my father is a film director and for my mother a more transient work as an actress. I think I understand the struggle of living in that world – it’s not easy. Also, the amount of work, time, effort, joy and all these things go into making a movie, for example.
“My parents were not the kind of people who forced their children to work [acting]. If anything, they really tried to stop me from doing it because it’s a tough world out there. Maybe you don’t want your child to get into it when something else is safer, although sometimes that’s not the case at all. But you know, you do what you want. All is well now.”
“I look back and I’m proud of my 16-year-old self, like, ‘You really worked.’
“There are things you only learn from the real world, but drama school is a great place to practice and fall and try things out over the course of three or four years. There are a lot of things you have to leave in school that don’t serve you in any way, but it gives you a lot of good stuff.”
“You have to connect with the human in everyone. Sure you can get a little starstruck and stuff, but I think the more you can get away from that and just see the person, the more you can connect as people. “
“I never wanted to be known as a character as stuck in a role. As an actor, I always want to keep doing different things.”
“Beauty is not flawless. Beauty is often flawed. Everything is. Some things are more obviously flawed and some things are not. Life goes up and down in waves, and I hope we can now ride down the wave and into the wave of flawed beauty.”
Hera Hilmar has spread the scope of her career internationally. With her impressive acting experience, it is no wonder that she is also strongly recognized at the level of the global entertainment industry.
