“You can’t write about deaf people without input from a deaf person. Without us, there is nothing about us. Counselors should be involved at all stages of working with deaf people.”

“I am constantly struggling to represent my Deaf identity but I feel like my voice is not being heard – I feel torn. Torn between representing the Deaf community and telling our story but wanting to pursue a career with good working relationships.”

“I hope to make the deaf community proud and break even more barriers.”

“I feel now that I’ve finished ‘EastEnders’, I want to do more TV shows and learn more about the experiences of deaf people. It’s not just about a deaf story, it’s a story that just happened to be deaf.”

“We hear a lot about being a woman and what women look like in the dating scene, but it’s a very different experience as a deaf woman.”

“How does a young deaf actor get a foot in the door when the door is closed to them from the start?”

“I am very happy that I have known who I am from a very young age. I never thought: ‘I wish I could have listened.’ Because if I was listening, I would be a completely different person. I wouldn’t have the life experience that I have. I will be really normal. I don’t want to be normal – that’s boring.”

“It’s okay to make mistakes, we all do. If we don’t make mistakes, how are we going to learn?”

“Before I had an agent, I tried to apply for a Spotlight membership and was rejected more than once.”

“I often get a script that isn’t quite right. They would write my characters as a large group of people in a room arguing with each other, follow what was being said and repeat things back to them.

“My reality is not always good.”

“What I do know is that disabled people should not be responsible for curing non-disabled people out of their ignorance.”

“Saying ‘no’ is a privilege that most people take for granted, I knew I’d be the first deaf dancer and it felt wrong to say ‘no’. It was a big platform, I knew how popular ‘Strictly’ was, so Finally I said yes – I would do it for the deaf community. Little did I know how magical and beautiful it would be for me personally too.”

“It’s a huge privilege to be the first deaf person to play a regular character and it’s been long overdue.”

“It’s not enough to lift me up, there are so many talented deaf people out there and thousands of amazing deaf stories to tell.”

“Being deaf is a joy.”

“If you put in proper support, set it all up, I can do my job as easily as anyone else.”

Rose Ayling-Ellis is living proof that deaf people can achieve just like anyone else. No wonder she gets a lot of attention from the younger generation.
