“I sound like a dog, but most jokes are bad – we all know that. [I got] It was great to read a script written by a young woman that felt like a real person talking and being funny.”

“I got four DMs from women saying, ‘Oh my God, I had a miscarriage too. And hearing you laugh about it was really therapeutic.”

“When I first moved to LA, I thought I’d be a movie star in a year or I’d go home and work at Walgreens. […] Now, I’d say the goal is to keep working in comedy – as long as I’m doing things I think are funny, it doesn’t matter.”

” I thought I was going to be a dancer for a long time because I loved dancing, but I always felt lost and confused and alone. I realized I was going to do what I wanted because nothing else was working.”

“My goal was always to try. I was like, I don’t care if I make it or if I fail. For so long, so many people told me I couldn’t – well, blonde. But at least let me try.”

“I’m really enjoying trying out new material and refining it – choosing topics I feel passionate about on stage. I now approach writing my stand-up the way I learned from watching writing for television, where the story and content come first and then we make it funny.”

“Last year, I had a miscarriage and I’m totally stand-up about it now. The best decision I ever made was being open about my miscarriage, but it wasn’t without its challenges. I was recently told by someone in the business that that topic is not appropriate. It really blew me away – it’s interesting to see how people aren’t always prepared when you have to do things like that. But I won’t stop.”

“I’m very proud of myself for turning my trauma into comedy. That’s what I’m here to do. And I will continue to do that.”

“I like to spend my money on art that I can wear, so for me that would be a super special tie-dye hoodie or a unique pair of jeans covered in patches or jewels.”

“I always say to my friends, ‘We’re the kind of people who like comedy TV shows a little too much, where we need to make our lives like them.'”

“I let everyone know, ‘I’m not doing well.’ Of course, you have friends who say, ‘Exercise and get some sun, and you’ll be fine!’ And I’m like, ‘Fuck you.’ And then you have friends who stick up your ass.”

Esther Povitsky is funny, loving and happy. Just seeing her performance can make everyone happy in no time.
