“I’m trying to think back to childhood and my earliest moments of creativity because I was born into it. […] I was born in a family where creativity was the solution to any problem.”
“It was part of my upbringing, before I remember I had no idea, I was doing art! This is what I want to do.”
“I remember sitting in the car on the way home from school and my mom asking my older brother and I what we wanted to do as adults. I don’t know why she asked this question but she thought, my elder brother goes, I think I will become an artist and I think I will also become an artist.
“I had parents who instilled in me from a young age the feeling that I could do anything I wanted to do, and that a career in the arts made sense as a more predictable career.”
“I feel so lucky because I know so many kids that I love [art] Just as much and as good, or better, than those who have been conditioned from childhood that they might not be able to do that.”
“If Covid-19 has taught us anything, it’s how easily we can all become redundant.”
“Imagination and creativity have become very necessary in this time of lockdown as we may not be going out for work. Creativity is how we occupy ourselves and give ourselves a sense of purpose, and many people’s solutions.
“I went through a lot of depression and that’s when I really turned to art and songwriting. I spend most days in my bedroom writing poems and songs.”
“I spent many hours writing songs trying to express my feelings of loss and anxiety.”
“Anna and Apocalypse is a defining moment for me when I was 18.”
“With Anna I went into it with an incredibly open mind: it’s a small indie film, I doubt anyone is going to see it but I really believe in it and I’m excited to do it. I had the beautiful icing on the cake for the hard work the entire team put into bringing that character to life.”
In my career, I have played two characters who have had an abortion. In The More You Ignore Me, my character had an on-screen miscarriage, where we see the effects on Dickinson, and how Sue deals with her pain and grief throughout the season. It was really shocking to me how many women around me, whether it was in production or in family and friends who came through it.”
“It’s really fun to work on a show where all the female characters — I would say all the characters on the show are very three-dimensional and not only strong, but they’re flawed and they all have their own inner characteristics. The complexities and difficulties they grapple with and strive towards, that’s really special.”
“In terms of my experience working on the show and what it has given me as a woman, I feel very empowered to work on the show. I’ve been doing a lot of research on women’s history, and especially this season I’ve been doing a lot of research on salonnières, which are female nurses throughout the ages, and the social roles they played in women’s emancipation.
“I take music as seriously as acting.”
“Music is so comforting to me that it’s a safe place that I keep away from people.”
“I want to do music on a professional level. I play the piano and I’ve been working on an album for the past year. I would say that the music will be released within the next year.
“I read a lot, I always try to keep up with the book. I always feel recharged after reading a great book. I surround myself with artists and people I love and who remind me that it’s okay to have creative lulls and not be constantly and that we all go through that.”
“I’m a bit of a nerd and I would have liked to find a moment for the university. But that’s the great thing about Dickinson. I learn a ridiculous amount about Emily Dickinson and the world around her. It is a history class, an English literature class and a sociology class.”
“”For me to go to New York and shoot a fantastic, female-driven show to be proud of my weird side, the side of myself that I love the most and the truest sense of who I was as a child. Child.”
“Perhaps being away from England and working on a show about a woman poet who was not understood in her time, an outwardly queer show that glorified queerness, made it less scary to enjoy and explore those elements of myself. If I hadn’t got the show, I probably wouldn’t have.
“I love the word fantastic. I don’t think it’s specifically about sexuality, I see it as a mindset and feeling empowered in queer and queer sides of myself. I think queer is a beautiful word in that sense. It is an attitude. That’s how I know my friends in New York.”
“If I were a rich white girl like Sue and if I was in an unhappy marriage, I imagine I would definitely be angry and try to get provocative actors around me.”
“The constraints on women at that time were so intense – women were so oppressed – I don’t know how much I could tap into the obvious, queer, queer side of myself. But it all depends on the class. I love that this season really looks at class and race and the impact they have on our ability to use our voice and become the person we want to be.”
“In music, I am a director, producer, show runner. I can get as much or as little of those things as I want. And I can bring my own community into the music I make.”
“My relationship [New York City] There is one that goes deeper. I find that people are almost kinder now, more compassionate, in these very difficult, strange times, I think the city has come alive in a different way. “
“I very much hope that the pandemic means artists can return to the city. I hope this will mean a drop in prices so that the city can be reborn into that artistic dreamland of the 1980s and 1990s.”
Ella Hunt is such a sweetheart. She is talented, amazing and inspiring. Well done, Ella!
